Empowering Rural Screening: Gynocular T2D Transforms Cervical Cancer Triage in Mysore

Background :

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India. To improve early detection in
underserved communities, the Public Health Research Institute of India (PHRII) initiated a mobile
cervical cancer screening program in Mysore using VIA and the Gynocular T2D device.

Methodology :

From November 2015 to August 2016, 199 women underwent screening. VIA was performed during
speculum exams, followed by Swede scoring using Gynocular T2D. A Swede score >4 triggered
monitoring or referral. Pap smears were conducted for selected cases.

Results :

176 cases included in final analysis
38 women (21.6%) were VIA positive
Gynocular identified 6 VIA-positive and 7 VIA-negative women with Swede score >4
2 VIA-negative women were biopsied due to high Swede scores
Gynocular triaging prevented overtreatment in 32 women (18.1%)

Conclusion :

Using Gynocular T2D in rural outreach settings not only increased diagnostic accuracy but also avoided
unnecessary referrals. This approach made cervical cancer screening more efficient and patient-centric.
