Background :
A crossover randomized clinical trial at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Bangladesh evaluated whether nurses trained in VIA could effectively perform colposcopy using Gynocular and the Swede score system.
Methodology :
- 932 women included
- Nurses trained on-site in colposcopy and Swede scoring
- Participants randomized for initial evaluation via Gynocular or stationary colposcope
- Swede scores assessed by both nurse and doctor independently
Results :
- High agreement in Swede scores between nurses and doctors (κ = 0.858–0.859)
- CIN2+ detected in 39 cases (4.2%)
- No significant difference in diagnostic accuracy between colposcope types or examiner background
Conclusion :
With minimal training, nurses were able to deliver colposcopy-level diagnostic accuracy using Gynocular. This model has the potential to revolutionize cervical screening accessibility in low-resource regions.
